The Department of Agriculture has released data indicating that 126.8 million kilos of grapes have already been registered, significantly surpassing the 77.7 million from the previous year. This figure represents 37.3% of the total volume expected for the 2025 campaign. The harvest has commenced across all designations of origin, with a particular emphasis on the macabeo and xarel·lo varieties, which are showing an "especially" early character.
The macabeo and xarel·lo varieties are leading the intake at wineries, with 53.6 million kilos and 30.6 million kilos respectively. These amounts correspond to 67% and 38% of the total volume harvested last year for each variety. Other grapes such as chardonnay (16.6 million kilos), pinot noir (4.94 million), white garnacha (4.8 million), and ull de llebre (2.1 million) have also begun to be collected.
The campaign officially began on July 21st with the chardonnay variety in the DO Penedès. During the first and second weeks of August, other important varieties like xarel·lo, white garnacha, and ull de llebre were added. Geographically, Penedès is the most advanced region, while Priorat and Pla de Bages are in earlier stages.
The Penedès and Cava designations of origin collectively account for over 102 million kilos. DO Catalunya has registered 12.4 million kilos, and DO Terra Alta nearly 750,000 kilos. The Department of Agriculture highlights the generally "good" phytosanitary condition of the vineyards, although powdery mildew has required special monitoring by growers.
Despite the preliminary data, the ministry considers it premature to draw definitive conclusions about the final production volume, as the harvest of mid- and late-ripening varieties is still ongoing. The accelerated ripening has been a key factor in this early start to the campaign.
