Bàsquet Girona president Marc Gasol has unveiled ambitious plans for the renovation of the Fontajau pavilion, which include an expansion of capacity and structural improvements, under a 50-year concession.

During an informal meeting at Fontajau, Gasol addressed several key issues for the club's future, both structurally and sportingly. The priority is the transformation of the pavilion, an infrastructure that has not been renovated since 1993.
The project envisions a concession similar to the Estadi Montilivi model, with an approximate duration of five decades. This initiative, which has the joint support of the Girona City Council and the club, will allow for an investment of "several million euros" to modernize the facility.
The renovation will include an increase in capacity to 6,000 spectators, with the possibility of reaching 7,000 for concerts. Furthermore, the exploitation of the space will be improved, with an emphasis on marketing (public address system, lighting), access, and versatility, so that Fontajau can host a wider variety of events.
Regarding the most urgent improvements, Gasol was optimistic about the installation of LED lights for the next season. However, he expressed concern about other deficiencies, such as the provisional installation of generators and the condition of the shower water, while highlighting good communication with the city council. A definitive solution for structural problems like leaks is also being sought.

"What works, must be taken care of."

In the sporting sphere, the club aims to maintain the current core of the men's first team, with the priority being the continuity of coach Moncho Fernández, who is under contract until 2027. Work is also underway to renew players such as Otis Livingston and Sergi Martínez. Gasol opened the door to a possible change in the team's naming if an agreement is reached with a sponsor.
Regarding participation in European competitions, Gasol explained that last season the club chose not to compete to consolidate the project. Looking ahead, the club does not rule out Europe, but the decision will depend on the season's progress and the competitive landscape, always with the goal of economic sustainability.

"My obsession is to build a sustainable club. Generating budgets that produce losses would not be responsible."

In the women's section, Gasol confirmed that efforts are being made to renew Roberto Íñiguez, coach of Spar Girona, after a historic season that culminated in a European Final Six. He highlighted the team's ability to compete at the highest level and clarified that players under contract until the end of the season could only leave for the WNBA if they pay the stipulated buyout clause.
