Spar Girona captain Marta Canella analyzed the turning point the team is experiencing in January 2026, following defeats that ended their winning streak at Fontajau and caused them to lose the league leadership.

The month of January has been particularly complicated for Spar Girona, which saw its impressive 19-game winning streak at Fontajau broken after falling to Galatasaray in the EuroLeague. Furthermore, the defeat in Gernika on day 7 meant the loss of the regular league leadership.

"More than January being uphill, it is the turning point of the middle of the season."

Canella, who is debuting as captain in her third season at the club, attributes this moment to physical fatigue and opponents having a better understanding of the team's demanding playing style. Despite the difficulties, the Galician player maintains ambition regarding the European competition: “It wouldn't be fair to consider it an objective, but I do believe it was a dream when starting this EuroLeague season, and right now we have it within reach.”

"He is a born leader, the captain of the ship wherever he goes. He goes all in with what he has and has demonstrated that he is capable of getting the best out of teams and players regardless of the circumstances."

The player also reflected on the figure of coach Roberto Íñiguez, highlighting his methodology and discipline. Regarding the Copa de la Reina, the draw paired Uni with Avenida in a late slot (Friday at 9:30 p.m.), a fact that Canella described as “sad” for such an important competition, although the team is satisfied with the work done so far.
