The Emergency Medical System (SEM) has managed a total of 153 incidents in Catalonia following the solar eclipse, according to data updated until Friday at 7:30 AM. Of this number, 12 people required ambulance assistance, with seven being transferred to healthcare centers: one critical case with trauma, one serious, three less serious, and two minor. The remaining cases, 146 users, received telephone assistance through 061 Salut Respon.
Out of the total incidents managed by the SEM, 72 were directly linked to ophthalmological problems. Between Wednesday morning and Friday, the service received 164 calls related to the astronomical phenomenon.
The incidents were distributed across various health regions: Girona (20), Barcelona City (19), Barcelona Metropolitan North (34), Central Catalonia (7), Lleida (11), Camp de Tarragona (30), Barcelona Metropolitan South (16), Terres de l’Ebre (6), and Penedès (9). No incidents were registered in Alt Pirineu i Aran.
Additionally, as of Thursday, the healthcare system reported 450 ophthalmological emergencies attended in the preceding two days coinciding with the total solar eclipse. A large portion of these visits, 239 users, were to hospital emergency rooms on Wednesday itself, while 165 went to primary care centers (CAPs). This increase in consultations for eye conditions represented between 2% and 3% of the total hospital emergency activity.
