This Wednesday marked the start of circulation for the new SEM units in the Girona region, notable for their modernized appearance and a qualitative leap in medical equipment. The primary goal is to enhance safety for both healthcare professionals and road users, as well as to enable more precise diagnostic orientation directly at the incident site.
Externally, the most significant change is the implementation of the Battenberg pattern, a high-visibility livery system with alternating rectangular blocks and reflective materials. This configuration allows vehicles to be identified from up to 500 meters away. The color green has been assigned to ambulances, consistent with other emergency services of the Generalitat.
In addition to the Battenberg pattern, the ambulances include an inverted reflective 'V' at the rear to alert other drivers when the vehicle is stopped, and a perimeter reflective profile that is luminescent by day and reflective by night. Elements such as an animal deterrent and new perimeter, front, side, and rear lights have also been added, along with red lights inside the doors and white lights in the assistance cabin, to optimize safety in low-visibility conditions.
The renewal also involves the creation of three new unit typologies, with a total of 73 vehicles distributed throughout the territory, six of which will operate in Girona. These units are designed to support both urgent and non-urgent medical transport, including logistical support units, versatile ambulances, and shuttle units.
Regarding internal technology, the new ambulances incorporate advanced medical equipment that facilitates more precise diagnosis at the emergency scene. This will allow for immediate ultrasound and blood analysis results, enabling early treatment initiation and determining the most appropriate hospital destination. Devices such as gas analyzers, videolaryngoscopes, vibrating mesh nebulizers, caterpillar chairs, stretchers for overweight patients, child restraint systems, and specific backpacks for mass casualty incidents have been added.
Basic Life Support units have also been equipped with new materials, such as monitor-AEDs, pelvic binders, and tourniquets. The SEM has improved connectivity and cybersecurity with new onboard computers, more radio channels, and portable transceivers, ensuring that teams are always connected to the central dispatch.
These improvements in image and equipment are accompanied by a reinforcement of services in the Girona demarcation, where the new model has become operational with 224 new ambulances, 81 more than in the previous tender. The total investment exceeds 278 million euros over a five-year period, aiming to enhance response capacity and absorb greater demand for medical transport throughout the region.
