According to EAE Business School, nearly half of all households in Spain now own a pet, with an average annual expenditure ranging from 500 to 1,000 euros per animal.

In Catalonia, the trend is particularly strong, with 2024 records showing twice as many new pets as newborn babies. This shift has boosted the pet industry, which generated 5.770 billion euros in 2023 and supports 75,000 jobs across the country.
Food remains the largest expense, accounting for over 2.5 billion euros of the market. However, veterinary care is a major budget factor, representing up to 45% of total costs. Additionally, the Animal Welfare Law 7/2023 now mandates liability insurance, adding an extra 30 to 60 euros to the annual bill.
