The specific modification of the Girona General Urban Planning Plan number 87 – Railway Sector, linked to the reform of Plaça d'Espanya, was approved with votes in favor from the governing team (Guanyem, Junts, and ERC), the PSC, and the PP, with only Vox voting against. However, the approval was overshadowed by a heated political argument.
PSC Councilor Cristina Cots lamented the delay, stating that the planning “could have been approved many years ago.” The Councilor for Proximity Urbanism, Lluís Martí, responded harshly, claiming the delay was the fault of the central administration.
“"It is a shame that you are claiming this when it was the State that blocked the planning and the ministry did not want to assume the cost of the works."
The tension was so high that Mayor Lluc Salellas had to intervene to cut off PSC spokespersons Bea Esporrín and Maxi Fuentes, who had also criticized the mayor for not receiving an urgent motion regarding the Rodalies commuter rail service. Martí added that “it seems they are mocking us by going back and forth” with the process.
The approved modification allows the council to transfer 11,507 square meters of municipal land, designated for railway use upon the arrival of the AVE, to the public company Adif. In exchange, the City Council will receive ownership of both Plaça Espanya and Poeta Marquina. The councilor confirmed that the construction project, tendered by Adif in the summer for 3.6 million euros, will begin “shortly.”
