The management of Spar Girona has paved the way for the renewal of coach Roberto Íñiguez, ensuring his continued presence on the bench. The Basque coach, who has completed two and a half seasons in his second stint with the team, has achieved significant milestones such as winning a regular league season, returning the team to the EuroLeague, and placing it among the top four in the recent final six tournament.
The club believes that Íñiguez has demonstrated sufficient merit to warrant the renewal. For his part, the coach, despite having received other offers, has expressed his desire to continue in Girona, where he feels comfortable. The contract extension has already been agreed upon by both parties.
The potential continuation of Íñiguez was already hinted at weeks ago, when the club president, in an informal meeting with journalists, stated that the renewal was practically a done deal and praised the coach's work. A day earlier, the sports director had also confirmed to a media outlet that the renewal was imminent.
“"I have asked my representative not to listen to any offers because I first wanted to know Bàsquet Girona's intentions."
In an interview in March, the coach expressed his willingness to prioritize the club's intentions before exploring other options. This decision aligns with the team's desire to keep him as the project leader from the bench. After the elimination in the league semifinals, the coach made only an informal statement about his immediate plans.
Íñiguez's relationship with Girona dates back to 2014 when he discovered the city during a sabbatical year. His first tenure as the team's coach was a success, culminating in a league victory. After coaching several international clubs, he returned to Fontajau in December 2023 to turn the team's situation around, achieving a Top-4 spot in the EuroLeague and winning the regular season of the Women's League last season, in addition to this season's Catalan League.
With the season concluded, the offices at Fontajau are bustling with activity for the sports planning of the next season. Currently, the team only has two players under contract for the upcoming season. The confirmation of the coach's continuity will now allow for the completion of a roster that is expected to be significantly renewed, but with guarantees to face the EuroLeague qualifying phase.
