The "Sempre Acompanyats" program, driven by the 'la Caixa' Foundation in collaboration with Girona City Council and the Red Cross, offers activities during the summer months for people over 60 in Girona. The aim is to address the loneliness and isolation that many elderly individuals experience when cities empty out and usual services close for holidays.
The activities emphasize the relational aspect, seeking to strengthen the sense of community and encourage participants to feel like active agents in their environment. Efforts focus on personal care and caring for others, with proposals covering personal well-being, social gatherings, creative expression, intergenerational activities, and group workshops.
Currently, the program serves 185 people in Girona, thanks to a technical team from the Red Cross, over 39 local agents, and 8 volunteers. This year's program includes workshops on ballroom dancing, crafts, crochet, painting, jewelry making, preventive health talks (pain management, hypertension, diabetes, first aid), and sessions on using mobile phones and artificial intelligence.
The program's mission is to empower elderly individuals experiencing loneliness, positioning them as active subjects in their aging process and supporting them in seeking a fulfilling life. It also seeks the involvement of citizens and the community environment to build alliances.
The "Sempre Acompanyats" program extends to 13 territories, including cities such as Lisbon, Porto, Málaga, Pamplona, Sabadell, Terrassa, Tortosa, Girona, Tàrrega, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, and Lleida.
