The news has been a major setback for Girona. After months of being sidelined in Barcelona, the goalkeeper had regained his starting position under Míchel, aiming for a ticket to the 2026 Mexico/United States/Canada World Cup. This unfortunate new injury seriously compromises his presence in Julian Nagelsmann's squad.
The injury, sustained during last Saturday's match against Real Oviedo at the Carlos Tartiere, has forced the club to take drastic action. Girona announced that the keeper, on loan from Barça, must undergo surgery to resolve the issue in his left hamstring.
“"It is incredibly cruel. Marc had just returned and was on a very good path; we will be very happy about his return to the national team. Now, only one thing matters: recovering health, calmly and without pressure. We are all with him."
The operation is scheduled for this Friday. Once completed, Girona will be able to accurately determine the recovery time. In the worst-case scenario, the goalkeeper could be out for up to four months, which would mean saying goodbye to the season and, consequently, to the World Cup starting on June 11.
This absence will also affect the German national team, as he will miss the international friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana scheduled for March 27 and 30, the last commitments before the World Cup squad announcement.
