A neighborhood initiative in Girona has collected over 200 signatures in a week to demand measures against crime and degradation affecting the Migdia Park area in the Pla de Palau-Sant Pau district. Residents express that their patience is "at its limit" due to the transformation of what they consider a "family-friendly" space into a "hotbed of crime" with constant drug trafficking, particularly on Universitat de Cervera street.
The residents warn of a "worrying increase in crime," including "robberies" and "incidents of violence," making them feel "unsafe" leaving their homes. They deem the situation "intolerable" and demand "concrete measures immediately" from "local authorities" to prevent it from worsening.
The demands include increased police presence as a deterrent, a plan for public space improvement and maintenance with regular park cleaning, and the renovation of street lighting to enhance nighttime security. They also call for investments to promote "positive activities" and community events that "encourage neighborhood participation" and reverse the "sense of abandonment."
In parallel, 38 neighborhood communities have organized to oppose the planned construction of a new concert venue on Emili Grahit street in the same district. They have submitted objections and are collecting signatures in person at the Centre Cívic de Palau, arguing that the facility will "gravely affect the rest, parking, and tranquility of the area." The Girona City Council has already denied the initial license due to non-compliance with requirements.
