Young people aged 18 to 25 now represent 57% of new drivers in Spain, a sharp decline from the 73% recorded in 2000.

Data from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) shows a major shift. In 1986, 76% of licenses were issued to those under 25, compared to just 57% in 2024. Economic factors and new transport options like electric scooters are the main causes.

"Young people have other priorities and a huge range of alternative transport options now."
