The contracting board proposed the award to Artífex Infraestructuras SLU, the only company that submitted a bid. The meeting was held on April 30, and the company obtained the highest score in the evaluation process. The project has an execution period of thirteen months, and work is expected to begin this autumn.
The footbridge has been closed since December 2020, when a technical report detected structural pathologies, mainly rusted beams and damaged concrete slabs. This infrastructure is an important connection point for residents in the Font del Rei area.
The rehabilitation project includes significant improvements in accessibility and safety. The usable width of the footbridge will be expanded from 1.40 meters to 2.80 meters, facilitating pedestrian traffic and use by people with reduced mobility. Additionally, lighting will be incorporated on both sides and transparent railings will be installed to enhance the sense of security and comfort.
The infrastructure, built about fifty years ago as a temporary solution, had become a regular crossing point. Now, the Girona council is in the final administrative phase to formalize the award. The contracting board has requested the necessary documentation from the company, including the definitive guarantee and insurance policy, within seven working days.
Beyond the technical reform, the project also includes a symbolic dimension. The new footbridge will be named after the Girona actress and director Cristina Cervià, in recognition of her career and involvement in the city's cultural fabric.
