The Oncolliga Girona Foundation made the decision public during the presentation of the 13th edition of the Oncotrail. These €100,000 will be allocated to a study led by the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI) that seeks a new generation therapy with fewer side effects than current treatments.
The research project, currently in the preclinical phase, is headed by researcher Jordi Frigola. The funding will be provided in two stages: €50,000 comes from donations collected during the 2025 Oncotrail edition, and the remaining €50,000 will come from the event to be held in 2026.
The Oncotrail, which will take place on October 3 and 4 in Palafrugell, is a 100 km sporting and solidarity challenge for teams. Each participating team must make a minimum donation of €1,000. Since its inception in 2013, the event has raised over three million euros for social and health projects.
In addition to the new research project, the event also served to detail the destination of the €430,093 raised in the 2025 edition. The main bulk, €239,841, has been allocated to improvements in Girona hospitals and the ICO Girona, with the aim of reinforcing the diagnosis and comfort of oncology patients.
The remaining €129,027 has been used to maintain the assistance services offered by Oncolliga, including psychological support, home physiotherapy, and oncological aesthetics, which are essential services for patients' quality of life.
