The Just Manuel Casero short novel award, organized by Llibreria 22 in Girona, has been a literary staple since its inception in 1981. Driven by bookseller and activist Guillem Terribas, the prize has become a significant reference in Catalonia, celebrating 44 editions and launching the careers of many prominent authors.
This year, the jury—composed of Eva Vàzquez, Mita Casacuberta, Josep Maria Fonalleras, Imma Merino, Cristina Masanés, and Jordi Gispert—awarded the top prize to Roger Vilà. Additionally, for the first time in the contest's history, two finalists were named ex aequo: Ramon Macià with Ingràvids and Benet Salellas with Els jardins de la Nora.
The winner, Roger Vilà Padró, is a philologist born in Sentmenat in 1968 who debuted in 2013 with the novel Marges. In Hortoneda, the author follows the journey of Bernat and Bàrbara, a couple attempting to rediscover their bond after years of stagnation. All the awarded works will be published by Univers.
