The Government of Catalonia, through the Catalan Institute for Foster Care and Adoption (ICAA), has issued a public appeal for citizens to join the foster care program, as the region requires approximately 400 additional foster families to meet the needs of children and adolescents under protection. This demand was underscored during the 3rd Conference on Foster Families of Catalonia, held at the Xanascat hostel in Cabrera de Mar, which brought together over 230 attendees.
The Minister of Social Rights and Inclusion, Raúl Moreno, emphasized the importance of foster care as a fundamental pillar for ensuring that children in care can grow up in a safe and loving environment, fostering their personal and educational development. "We want more children to grow up in a family environment that promotes their educational and personal development," stated Moreno, who detailed that efforts are underway to increase aid and strengthen support resources for families.
Currently, Catalonia has 1,003 children and adolescents in foster care, family collaboration, or de facto guardianship situations, supported by 886 families. The deinstitutionalization strategy also prioritizes that children under six grow up in a family environment whenever possible. The Department has expanded aid for children with special needs and is increasing the network of Visiting Spaces for Children and Adolescents (EVIA), from two to seven locations.
The conference featured presentations on emotional support, including a lecture by psychologist Vinyet Mirabent Junyent, followed by a dialogue session. Concurrently, children and adolescents participated in recreational and educational activities, and the event concluded with a communal lunch.
Individuals interested in becoming foster families can obtain information from the ICAA or the Collaborating Institutions for Family Integration (ICIF). The process includes assessment, training, accompaniment, and professional follow-up. Further details on modalities and requirements are available on the Department's foster care website.
