Over 300 people gathered in the Calella Town Hall square on Friday evening to condemn the sexist aggression that left a young woman brain dead and her mother in critical condition.

The rally, called by the local council hours earlier, served to express the pain and indignation of the citizens. The young woman, just over 20 years old, is in an irreversible state, while her mother, around 60 years old, fights for her life. The Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan Police) continue searching for the aggressor, who assaulted the victims in their home.

"This person wanted to kill them, therefore he is a murderer. I hope he is arrested, brought to justice, and above all, locked up in prison."

Marc Buch · Mayor of Calella
Mayor Marc Buch called for a "deep reflection" at social and political levels to strengthen mechanisms for preventing gender violence. Buch regretted that current measures "do not work" and advocated for the administration to act ex officio in domestic violence cases, even if the victim does not seek help.

"Calella is and wants to be a space of refuge, welcome, and response."

Calella Women's Association · Spokesperson
During the concentration, the Calella Women's Association read a manifesto describing gender violence as a "collective failure" and urging society to take responsibility for building a safer environment. The victims are "very well known" in Calella, where they have lived and worked for years.
