A striped dolphin was found dead this Thursday at noon on Ponent beach in Mataró, after being spotted stranded near the rocks by local residents and authorities.

The Rural Agents and the Marine Animal Recovery Center (CRAM) responded to the scene. Despite initial efforts to assist the dolphin in the water, experts confirmed the animal had already passed away. The body was subsequently moved to the promenade for further examination.
The striped dolphin, scientifically known as Stenella coeruleoalba, is the most common cetacean in Catalonia, accounting for over 60% of sightings in the northwestern Mediterranean. This specific individual was smaller than the average adult, which can reach up to 2.6 meters in length.
While the species is currently listed as 'least concern' by the IUCN, experts from CRAM highlight that these animals face significant risks from marine pollution, overfishing, and accidental entanglement in fishing nets.
