Catalonia has recorded 461 forest fires since the beginning of 2026, which have scorched a total of 4,571 hectares, already exceeding half of the surface area burned during the entire previous year.

Forest activity has been particularly intense over the last fifteen days, a period in which more than 4,000 hectares have burned. One of the most significant outbreaks in recent weeks was the fire declared in the Gavarres area, which alone accounted for half of the affected surface area in this short period.
According to data provided by the Agents Rurals, the origin of the fires is diverse. Of the 461 episodes recorded, 72 were intentionally caused, such as the case registered in Tiana, in the Maresme region, at the end of June. In addition, 148 fires resulting from human negligence have been counted.

"Every year summers are more complicated because the periods of high temperatures and low humidity last longer."

a spokesperson for the Agents Rurals · Planning and Operational Coordination Unit
Faced with this scenario, those responsible for operational planning insist on the need for citizens to exercise extreme caution. The extension of risk periods, characterized by the combination of high temperatures and very low ambient humidity, complicates extinction and prevention tasks during the summer campaign.
