The N-II highway in the Maresme region is set for a significant transformation under the Maresme Convention, presented by President Salvador Illa to local mayors. This agreement, involving an investment of 384 million euros until 2032, aims to reduce daily traffic by 10,000 vehicles and improve connectivity with the C-32 highway.
The road will feature one lane per direction for most of its route through the region. The first section to be developed will be in Mataró, with construction expected to begin in early 2027. However, in Mataró, a double lane in each direction will be maintained in certain areas due to urban characteristics.
The convention also includes the improvement of five interchanges with the C-32 in Teià, Premià de Mar, Cabrils/Vilassar de Mar, Alella - El Masnou, and Sant Andreu de Llavaneres. Furthermore, projects to enhance the connection with the C-32 at Calella and Pineda de Mar will be released for public consultation in the autumn. Currently, the N-II can experience traffic volumes of up to 30,000 vehicles per day in some sections.
Another notable initiative is the creation of a new, continuous cycling path and pedestrian promenade spanning 40 km along the Maresme coast, from Montgat to Malgrat de Mar. This cycling infrastructure, with an investment of nearly nine million euros, will be developed across four interurban sections.
Additionally, the project includes the establishment of a bus and bicycle lane named BRCAT, running from Blanes to Lloret, and the enhancement of the C-32 interchange with the GI-600 to improve traffic flow.
