The Consell Comarcal del Maresme has presented a Master Plan revealing the high flood risk in the region's streams, potentially affecting over 100,000 people and causing losses exceeding 3.4 billion euros.

This document, prepared by the regional body, highlights the vulnerability of the 65 streams in Maresme. The analysis details the possible consequences of a flood event on the population, buildings, and economic activity in the area.

"Climate change is aggravating the situation, but also the poor maintenance of hydraulic infrastructures. All this means we are in a serious situation."

The Master Plan stands as a fundamental tool for local councils, offering a rigorous diagnosis that should serve as a basis for decision-making, including those related to urban planning. According to the Consell Comarcal, the document aims to guide all municipalities towards coordinated and informed action.
One of the main problems identified is the fragmented management of the streams, where each municipality acts independently without a global vision. This lack of coordination hinders the effective reduction of the inherent danger due to the complex hydrogeomorphology of the Maresme terrain.

"If we add to this climate change and increasingly intense and concentrated rain episodes, we have these 'time bombs'."

To reverse this situation, a change in the stream management model is proposed, promoting closer coordination between local councils and the Catalan Water Agency, and granting a more active role to the Consell Comarcal in this task.
