The Mayor of Mataró, David Bote, announced this March 2026 that a growing number of squatting attempts in the city are being stopped before they can be finalized.

During the Local Security Council meeting, officials noted a significant shift in trends. Improved property protection and constant police presence in the Maresme capital have turned many potential occupations into failed attempts.

"More and more occupations are remaining as attempts and are not being consummated."

The use of anti-squatting doors and alarm systems by owners has been crucial. This private security, combined with the coordination between Local Police and Mossos d'Esquadra, allows for faster detection.
Interior Minister Núria Parlon also emphasized the need for better judicial coordination to tackle repeat offenders and property crimes effectively across the region.
