The Barnahus center in Mataró provided specialized care to 226 minors who were victims of sexual violence during 2025, marking a significant step in child protection within the Maresme region.

Since its inauguration in April 2024, the Mataró service has handled 413 cases. This rise in reported incidents across Catalonia is linked to improved detection mechanisms and increased public trust in the specialized support system provided by the Generalitat.
The Barnahus model integrates social, health, police, and judicial services under one roof. By recording a single testimony in a child-friendly environment, the system ensures that the minor does not have to undergo the trauma of repeating their story multiple times during the legal process.
A new permanent facility is currently under development in the Can Vilardell area of Mataró. Funded by 1.5 million euros from European grants, the wooden building is designed to offer a protective atmosphere and is expected to be completed within 10 months.
