The Mataró University Hospital, through its Intensive Care Unit (ICU), has initiated an ambitious humanization project aimed at significantly improving the experience of critical patients and their relatives during their hospital stay. The unit, which has 20 beds and treats approximately 690 patients annually, seeks to go beyond clinical care to also address the emotional and psychological aspects of hospitalization.
The project is based on a person-centered care model, promoting active family participation, clear and empathetic communication with healthcare professionals, and the creation of a more comfortable environment. Among the new initiatives implemented are the use of virtual reality headsets to facilitate patient relaxation and disconnection, as well as the presence of volunteers who offer emotional support to individuals experiencing loneliness and their family members.
Furthermore, occasional outings to the outdoors have been organized for selected patients, allowing them to enjoy fresh air and reduce anxiety, especially in cases of prolonged admissions. These actions aim to make the hospital stay more bearable and promote the comprehensive recovery of patients.
Open communication and shared decision-making are fundamental pillars of the project, ensuring that both patients and their families feel fully informed and supported throughout the entire care process. Mataró University Hospital thus reaffirms its commitment to a care model that prioritizes the overall well-being of patients and their environment.
