The Hospital Universitari de Mataró has launched a pioneering initiative allowing patients admitted to the Palliative Care Unit and those in end-of-life situations to receive visits from their dogs.

This measure aims to provide significant emotional support during the most delicate stages, recognizing the fundamental role pets play in many people's emotional environment.
"When we talk about companionship, we are also talking about caring for what is important at each moment. For many people, their pet is another family member, and being able to see and say goodbye to them at this time can have very special meaning," explains Txell Usas, a nurse and head of the Intermediate Care area.
Each meeting is planned individually with the healthcare team, considering the patient's condition, the dog's characteristics, and the space's conditions to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
The initiative coincides with World Palliative Care Day, celebrated on October 10th, highlighting the importance of comprehensive care focused on patient well-being.
