Since the Labandària school closed in September 2015, the central space has lacked a definitive use, being temporarily utilized for community activities. The new proposal, which has received broad political consensus, plans to retain two of the three current buildings and establish a multipurpose theater with capacity for 310 people, in addition to a community center with individual and shared spaces.
Mayor Àlex Neira estimates that, barring setbacks, the transformation works at Labandària could begin before the end of the current term. Furthermore, a walkway will be added to connect Jaume Brutau promenade with Pau Casals avenue to facilitate neighborhood mobility.
Conversely, the project to adapt the modernist building Can Cabotet as the new local police station is delayed. The building, abandoned for 30 years, requires complex internal renovation. Neira admitted that the unique nature of the house has necessitated collaboration with the Generalitat's Heritage area, although the project draft could be finalized in January.
“"pharaonic and unnecessary and involves excessive investment merely to fulfill the PSC's campaign promise to return the police to the town center."
Regarding housing, the keys to 43 official protection homes (HPO) in Els Ametllers were delivered in September, partially funded by Next Generation funds. The council continues to work on expanding the affordable housing stock with a new development of eight homes in Can Rivière and a new project on Sant Antoni street that will add 30 more official protection flats to the current offer.
