The support from Jéssica Albiach comes after the mayor of Moià, Dionís Guiteras (ERC), decided to proceed with the slaughterhouse expansion project and the construction of a biogas plant, despite the popular consultation resulting in a resounding 'no'.
The Comuns leader recalled that her party has opposed the project since its inception in March 2024, especially due to its impact on water usage. Currently, the slaughterhouse already generates 25% of Moià's total water consumption, a figure that could rise to 50% with the expansion, amidst a drought emergency.
Albiach pointed out that the slaughterhouse, which is private, has been reported and economically sanctioned for slaughtering up to 3,000 pigs daily, exceeding its 1,300 license limit. Furthermore, the project would affect the Pla de Castellnou, a natural area protected by the Catalunya Central Territorial Plan, which also houses Castellnou de la Plana, listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
“"Sometimes it is necessary to remember that democracy is not just voting every four years; it is also listening to the citizens, especially when they express themselves so clearly."
The president reaffirmed the Comuns' commitment to support all proposals arising from the platform and environmental groups to enforce the result of the popular consultation. During the day in Moianès, Albiach also visited the Espai Harmonia center and the Associació ambCavalls.
