The mayor reviewed the five episodes of torrential waters experienced in the municipality over the last seven years, highlighting that the problem stems from the town being built in an area with many ravines and the short distance between the sea and the Montsià mountain. This verticality causes the water to descend aggressively in a short time, leaving no room for reaction. Roig recalled that the damage report from the first episode in 2018 amounted to 8 million euros, with aid covering only 10% of the total, arriving two and a half years later.
“"For two terms, I have been a slave to the torrential rains. I am tied down, I cannot move forward no matter how much I want to. And this generates an unsustainable psychological burden."
One of the urgent solutions is the expropriation and demolition of the ten houses blocking the path of the Barranc del Llop in the l'Estona d'Alcanar Platja urbanization, to facilitate water drainage. Roig welcomed the fact that the Generalitat (Catalan Government) has given the green light to valuations and economic negotiations, aiming to finalize the process by the autumn of 2026.
“"We are the obstacle and we have to leave there, our houses are no longer habitable."
The mayor justified his resignation based on “coherence” and the need for the local administration to be led by a person with full capacity and energy. He stressed that the disasters are no longer isolated events but a direct consequence of climate change, entering a “vicious circle of repair-disaster”. He concluded that the future of Alcanar will be marked by protection against extreme weather phenomena, as “what is coming to us is very serious”.
