Opposition municipal groups in the Alcanar City Council have demanded the immediate convening of an extraordinary plenary session to address the necessary replacement following Mayor Joan Roig's resignation announcement.

The municipal groups Junts, the CUP, and the non-attached councilor, Txell Ulldemolins, issued a statement this Monday, December 15, 2025, arguing that Roig's resignation has created an interim situation that must be urgently resolved.
The opposition believes that the mayor's decision "demonstrates a clear lack of leadership, foresight, and responsibility on the part of the current governing team." They also criticize the handling of the announcement, made through the program Salvados and farewell letters, suggesting the main goal was "to clean up his public image."

The inaction and institutional paralysis we are suffering are inadmissible and are severely damaging the normal functioning of the Alcanar City Council.

The statement suggests that this strategy allows Roig to overlook "other internal reasons" that might have influenced his decision, such as an internal government scandal last summer, alleged manipulation of media, or difficulties in advancing various municipal projects.
The signatories stress that the mayor's resignation has political and administrative consequences that require the urgent adoption of decisions to restore stability and institutional normalcy in Alcanar, noting that "the citizens deserve a government equal to the circumstances."
