Joan Roig, the Mayor of Alcanar, has submitted his resignation, which will become effective during an extraordinary plenary session scheduled for next Friday, December 19, at 6:00 PM.

The mayor announced his decision last Sunday via a statement, explaining that the main reason was the physical and mental exhaustion generated by “the permanent management of the emergency” due to the torrential rains that have affected the municipality, along with the start of a new professional stage in teaching.

"Out of honesty with the citizens and with oneself, the mayoralty must be exercised with full capacity and dedication. When this is not possible, one must step aside."

Following Friday's plenary session, the current First Deputy Mayor, Councillor Neus Sancho, will temporarily assume the functions of the mayoralty.
Subsequently, within a period of 10 working days, a new session must be convened to elect the new mayor, as established by article 40 of the Regulation of organization, operation and legal regime of local entities. Marc Chavalera, the current Councillor for Economy and Finance and an economist by profession, will be proposed for this position.
Joan Roig i Castell thus ends more than seven years in office, having taken possession of the position on October 4, 2018. He had already resigned from the exclusive dedication regime last December 5.
