Alcanar Mayor Joan Roig submitted his resignation this week and will be replaced by the Councillor for Economy and Finance, Marc Chavalera, restructuring the Montsià government.

The resignation of Joan Roig, the Republican mayor, was officially announced through an open letter. Although the decision was made public earlier this week, it will become effective once formally acknowledged by the municipal plenary session. Roig, who holds university degrees, will step down from the exclusive dedication to the post he held at the Alcanar City Council.
The new mayor will be Marc Chavalera, a professional economist who previously served as the Councillor for Economy and Finance. This change occurs amidst other important local projects, such as the complete renovation of the Alcanar Municipal Sports Pavilion, which has received favorable approval from the Catalan Sports Council (Consell Català de l’Esport).
The transition has been accompanied by reactions from the opposition. The municipal groups of Junts, the CUP, and the non-attached councillor Meritxell Ulldemolins have demanded explanations and actions from the Alcanar City Council following recent political and local events.
