Octavi Ruiz, historic director of La Lira Ampostina, passes away

The musician led the school and the symphonic band for nearly 40 years, from 1981 until his retirement in 2020.

The culture of the Terres de l'Ebre region is mourning the death of Octavi Ruiz, who served as the director of the band and music school of La Lira Ampostina for nearly four decades, from 1981 to 2020.

The musical entity La Lira Ampostina announced the passing in a statement, highlighting Ruiz's lifelong dedication to music and the society. The musician, originally from Amposta, took over the direction of the school and band at just 25 years old, having emerged from the school itself and possessing a family environment deeply rooted in the entity, as his grandfather, Agustí Ruiz, was one of the founders.

Under his baton, La Lira experienced its most prosperous period, achieving international prestige. One of the most iconic moments was their performance at the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. He also participated in the tribute concert for the 30th anniversary of Al Vent, by singer-songwriter Raimon.
Throughout his career, Octavi Ruiz not only led La Lira in numerous auditoriums across Catalonia, Spain, and abroad, but also recorded six albums and earned significant recognition. Furthermore, he directed the municipal music band of Tortosa and was a conservatory professor.
His cultural and musical legacy has been recognized by the Amposta City Council, which has offered its official condolences. His awards include La Lira's gold medal, the Premi Lo Grifonet d’Òmnium, and the award at the Nit de la Cultura 2021. He was also the town crier for the Amposta Major Festivals in 2006.
