The anti-capitalist party CUP has voiced its disappointment following the municipal government's rejection of a motion to ban children's bullfighting events in Alcanar and les Cases. According to the CUP, this decision "perpetuates intolerable practices" and contradicts the government's supposed progressive stance.
The CUP's statement recalls that during the 2025 les Cases festivals and this year's May festivities, events such as a "bull gathering" and a "calf event" took place, designed to introduce bullfighting culture to children. The party argues that these activities cause pain and stress to the animals, particularly young calves separated from their mothers, and considers it unacceptable to entertain at their expense.
The CUP members describe these events as an "aberration" and "child indoctrination in animal cruelty." They emphasize that popular festivals should be respectful and free from violence towards animals, promoting culture and peaceful coexistence, and shielding minors from activities that encourage violence.
The motion proposed banning these children's gatherings and any bullfighting modality aimed at minors. The CUP regrets that the government has "turned its back on progress" and states it will continue fighting for a town free from animal violence, deeming it unsustainable to perpetuate these practices in 2026.
