According to the preliminary version of the Sectoral Territorial Plan for the Implementation of Renewable Energies in Catalonia (PLATER), the Montsià region must contribute 442.4 MW of solar photovoltaic energy. This capacity will be distributed as 194.9 MW in buildings, 58.5 MW in artificialized spaces (such as disused quarries), and 189 MW on non-artificialized land, which will occupy a total of 310 hectares, or 0.4% of the regional surface area.
The PLATER aims to regulate the implementation of renewable energies, mainly wind and photovoltaic, across Catalonia, ensuring the objectives set out in the PROENCAT 2050 are met.
Regarding wind energy, Montsià is expected to host 888,9 MW of capacity. The director of the ICAEN, Anna Camp, explained that the PLATER is a key tool for the decarbonization of the Catalan energy system, which requires the installation of 62,000 MW of renewable energy nationwide by 2050, according to the Catalonia Energy Outlook 2050 (PROENCAT).
During the presentation, elected officials were invited to participate in the final definition of the document. The public information period for the PLATER will last an extraordinary three months to facilitate local participation, during which Montsià municipalities can submit their proposals and subsequently adjust their urban planning regulations.
