The Balaguer City Council is facing institutional deadlock after opposition parties blocked a proposal to increase government salaries during a plenary session this February.

The PSC (Socialist Party) is now governing in a minority position following the exit of Treballem per Balaguer from the local administration. This shift led to the rejection of new financial terms for the executive branch, despite the mayor's claim that overall spending on elected officials would drop by 10%.
Mayor Lorena González proposed increasing her annual salary to 52,500 euros, alongside adjustments for councilors Jesús Cifuentes and Sandra Madueño. The defeat of this motion may force the government to link future budgets to a formal vote of confidence.

"Increased responsibility must be compensated."
