Balaguer City Council has put out to tender a new service to combat pigeon overpopulation in the municipality, which includes the installation of an automatic net and several cages in strategic locations.

The contract, valued at 24,000 euros, aims primarily to reduce the excessive presence of these birds in the streets, buildings, and public spaces of the capital of Noguera. According to municipal sources, the new automatic net will allow for faster interventions with a higher capture capacity than the traditional methods used until now.
The measure is part of a broader strategy to improve cleanliness and the conservation of urban heritage, as well as to ensure better neighborhood coexistence. In addition to the net, the use of cages in areas identified as critical points will be maintained, and the application of sterilizing feed will continue where its effectiveness has been proven.

"The measure seeks to act more effectively and continuously, combining different capture and control systems."

A study commissioned by the council detected more than 40 nesting sites in the city, with a density of 950 pigeons per km2, a figure that triples the recommended threshold. The final goal of the monitoring commission, in which residents and organizations participate, is to reduce this density to 300 pigeons per km2.
