The decision, made by the Diocese of Urgell, prioritizes the building's integrity and public safety. This measure comes after intense rainfall earlier this year accelerated the deterioration of the facade, which is constructed from limestone, a material particularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions.
“"After assessing the damage, we have commissioned a project to define the necessary actions for a comprehensive repair."
The most affected area is the main facade, where the presence of invasive fungi has also been detected, contributing to its poor condition. Initially, an alternative side access was considered in collaboration with the Paeria de Balaguer, but this option was discarded after small stones were also found to be falling in that area.
The closure of the temple, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN) and consecrated in 1358, not only affects liturgical activities but also restricts access to the Medieval Wall and the Portal del Gel Tower, limiting the tourist offerings of Balaguer's monumental complex. The diocese has reminded the public that alternatives for religious services are available in the city, such as the Sant Crist sanctuary, the Miracle church, or the Sagrat Cor church.
