This young news editor, 22 years old, has captivated the attention of his peers with an initiative that has led him to redefine how he experiences football. The challenge, which began on matchday 15 of the League, involves running the sum of Barça's goals in each match. For example, a 3-5 against Betis meant 35 kilometers, while a 0-2 away win translates to two kilometers.
The intensity of the challenge has increased with results like the 5-2 against Sevilla on March 15, which forced González to run 52 kilometers. This demand has sometimes caused him to suffer, admitting that he can no longer enjoy football in the same way as before, to the point of not watching entire parts of matches.
“"There are Barça matches that I simply don't watch."
The idea originated from conversations with friends and was inspired by a similar case involving Deportivo de la Coruña, although Barça usually offers higher scores. For González, originally from Torelló, in Osona, this challenge has been the perfect excuse to resume long-distance running after an ankle injury and a decrease in pace due to work. All his records can be followed on the Strava application.
Initially, the journalist planned to run all matches in all competitions, but quickly realized it was unsustainable. A clear example was the need to run 72 kilometers after a match against Newcastle, right after the 52 from Sevilla. Furthermore, he has discovered new routes around Barcelona, such as the coastline up to Premià, and has learned to combat the boredom of long distances.
“"It would be great to be able to do at least a couple of laps around Camp Nou."
With the current season almost over, Bernat González does not rule out continuing the challenge next season, hoping to start from matchday 1. As a lifelong Barça fan, his dream would be to be able to run inside the Camp Nou, emulating other fans who have achieved similar feats.
