Individuals experiencing nasal breathing difficulties due to congenital or traumatic structural alterations now have a new therapeutic option at the Vic University Hospital (HUV). When a conventional septoplasty is insufficient to correct issues with the wall separating the nasal cavities, functional rhinoplasty can reshape the nasal structure to improve respiratory function.
Unlike cosmetic surgery, the primary goal of this procedure is functional: to facilitate adequate breathing, enhance rest, and consequently, improve patients' quality of life. The decision to operate is made after an individualized assessment, and the procedure duration can range from three to four hours.
The introduction of this service addresses an existing healthcare need in the region. Previously, functional rhinoplasty was not part of the hospital's routine surgical activity, in line with the service distribution of the C-17 Healthcare Network. This expansion enhances the HUV's problem-solving capacity and offers a more accessible alternative for patients in the county.
Since early 2026, the Otorhinolaryngology team has already performed dozens of these procedures. It is anticipated that the hospital may progressively become a reference center within the C-17 Network for these types of operations.
