The medical profession in Osona celebrated the Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian this past weekend with an academic and cultural event organized by the Osona Regional Board of the Col·legi de Metges de Barcelona (CoMB) and the Osona Medical Sciences Association (ACMO). The event, held at the Paranimf in Vic, served to recognize various research studies and projects carried out by professionals from the Consorci Hospitalari de Vic (CHV) and the Fundació Hospital de la Santa Creu (FHSC).
In the published works category, Sofia Fontanet, a physician from the Urology Service at CHV, along with the team comprising Julio F. Calderón, Edgar Suquilanda, Fernando Gaona, Alejandro García, and Marta Piqueras, was awarded for the work titled “Comparison of endoscopic treatment for bladder neck contracture: a single centre study and review of literature”.
The category for cancer research works recognized, ex aequo, Daniel Badia, a physician from the Pathological Anatomy Service at CHV, and his team (Marina Sánchez and Irene Rodriguez) for the work “Local execution artificial intelligence for PD-L1 evaluation (tumor proportion score) in non-small cell lung carcinoma”. Dr. Emilia G. Sardo, from the Oncology Service at CHV, and her extensive team (including Maria Alejo, Marta Parera, Cristina Cruz, Nadia Espejo, K. Salas, A. Canet, M. Armengou, Carme Vila, Emma Puigoriol, Sonia Moros, Vanesa Álvarez, Irene Gallego, M. Panadès, Manuela Zarcero, Silvia Griñó, Mauricio Alejandro Tournour, and Arturo Iván Ominetti, and Eulàlia Puigdecanet) were also awarded for their work “Predictors of recurrence and survival in endometrial cancer: a 22-year single-center cohort”.
In the category of cancer research TFG (Final Degree Projects), a dual award was also presented. Katrina Gil, tutored by Marta Parera and Nadia Espejo, received an award for the work “Second primary malignancies in never-smoking women with non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma: a retrospective observational study at hospital universitari de vic (2002-2024)”. Similarly, Ana Jiménez, supported by Anna Arnau and Núria Torà, was recognized for her work “Characteristics and prognosis of cancers diagnosed in participants of the breast cancer early detection programme (bcedp) compared with those diagnosed outside the programme”.
The research works by residents also had their space. Alberto Joaquín Giménez, an orthopedic surgery and traumatology resident at CHV, was awarded for his study “Comparison between medium congruent and medial pivot polyethylenes in total knee replacement. A clinical trial in Osona.” Dr. Martha L. Marin, a geriatrics resident at CHV, received an ex aequo award for her work “Intimidad-res: intimacy, affectivity, and expression of sexuality in institutionalized elderly people”.
In the residents' clinical cases category, María A. Silva and Dr. Leydy N. López, both geriatrics residents at CHV, were recognized for the clinical case “When treating more does not mean treating better: appropriateness of therapeutic effort in advanced Parkinson's disease”.
Regarding unpublished works, the award went to Judit Muñoz, a family physician from EAP Santa Eugènia de Berga (ICS Catalunya Central), and Divina Costa, for the work “Polypharmacy in a rural setting: prevalence of polypharmacy in the ABS of Santa Eugènia de Berga”.
Finally, the XXVII Research Scholarship from the Osona Medical Sciences Association was awarded to Matilde Barneto, a specialist physician in Geriatrics at CHV, and her team (Mercedes S. Lucana and Maricelis Cruz), for the project “Residential admission as a critical moment in the life trajectory of the elderly: early mortality and associated factors”.
