A group of farmers and butchers from Pallars Jussà, together with the La Pobla de Segur City Council, have established the Escorxador Pirineus SCCL cooperative to reopen the municipal slaughterhouse and ensure the viability of the primary sector in the region.

This initiative represents a crucial step for the continuity of the slaughterhouse service, which had temporarily ceased operations on December 31, 2024, due to significant economic losses, estimated at around 60,000 euros annually. The project, developed in collaboration with the Ateneu Cooperatiu de l'Alt Pirineu i Aran, directly involves sector professionals in a new management model.

"We knew that if nothing was done, we ran the risk of losing an essential service that would weaken the primary sector and, therefore, the territory. We decided to act and create the conditions for the sector to take a step forward."

Marc Baró · Mayor of La Pobla de Segur
The creation of the cooperative not only resolves an immediate situation but is also envisioned as a future investment to strengthen the primary sector and consolidate a model based on territorial involvement. Former users of the slaughterhouse had already expressed their desire to reopen the facility in May of last year.

"Although it is not an easy challenge, the new entity is a tool to guarantee the continuity of the service and keep the livestock sector alive. When the administration and the sector work together, projects that initially seemed complicated can be moved forward."

Miquel Gordó · President of Escorxador Pirineus SCCL cooperative
This joint effort between the local administration and the livestock and meat sector professionals in Pallars Jussà aims to ensure the economic and social viability of a key infrastructure for the region.
