The animals, which spent the winter in Pessonada (in the municipality of Conca de Dalt, Pallars Jussà), are now heading to the mountains of Tor for the summer, where they will find fresh pastures. The journey was made on foot, combining traditional paths with stretches of road.
Herder Pablo Moreno highlighted the poor condition of the traditional routes and complaints from drivers about traffic jams as the main challenges of this activity. The route included towns such as La Pobla de Segur, Gerri de la Sal, Baro, Sort, Rialp, Llavorsí, La Vall de Cardós, and Alins.
The passage of the herd sparks curiosity among residents. This year's high temperatures necessitated starting the stages early in the morning to prevent the animals from tiring and to minimize time spent on hot asphalt.
Despite the difficulties, Moreno advocates for transhumance on foot as a traditional practice, believing the animals travel more comfortably than in trucks. Stops are made during the journey for the horses to rest, especially on hot days.
Fewer and fewer herders are opting for transhumance on foot, citing the neglect of traditional paths, the lack of generational succession, and driver complaints about traffic jams as deterrent factors.
