The Meteorological Service of Catalonia anticipates a brief respite from extreme heat this weekend, with a temperature decrease that will be temporary, as a new persistent heatwave is expected to begin on Sunday.

Following the extreme heat episode experienced between Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures in Catalonia will slightly decrease this Friday and Saturday. However, the atmosphere will remain summery and hot, with highs potentially nearing 40 °C in parts of Ponent and the Ebro Valley this Friday. In the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, local showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon.
This relief will be short-lived, as Sunday is expected to see a significant temperature increase due to a new mass of warm air. This situation will mark the beginning of a new persistent heatwave for the upcoming week, with tropical nights above 20 °C inland and torrid nights, nearing 25 °C, along the coast.
The new extreme heat episode will last at least until Wednesday, with temperatures comparable to the record-breaking values recorded last week. Vinebre nearly reached 44 °C, and values exceeding 43 °C were recorded in Riba-roja d’Ebre and Torroja del Priorat.
Given the absence of rainfall and intense heat, authorities maintain maximum concern regarding the risk of forest fires. Civil Protection and the Rural Agents urge extreme caution. The deputy director of Civil Protection, Imma Solé, indicated that while the Procicat plan for heat may be adjusted, the fire risk situation remains delicate, with 219 municipalities having activated the Alfa Plan at level 4.
