Livestock farmers in Pallars are showing growing concern over the rise in tuberculosis cases within the local wild fauna, including wild boars and deer. This situation poses a significant risk of contagion to domestic animals, with the possibility that a single infected animal could lead to the culling of an entire herd, a measure they deem excessive.
Representatives from the livestock sector and the ASAJA union met in Sort to discuss this issue and demand a review of the current health protocol. Their proposal includes culling only infected animals, improving wild fauna control, and adapting regulations to the specific conditions of the Pyrenean territory, alongside requesting greater support from public administrations.
The farmers emphasize their long-standing commitment to health controls but fear that the current situation could lead to the disappearance of many farms, jeopardizing mountain livestock farming. Concerns have also been raised about water quality, as many local springs and streams could become contaminated by sick animals.
Regarding water reserves, despite the heavy snowfall in the Pallars this past winter, the heat has caused significant snow evaporation (sublimation), affecting the flow of water into rivers and reservoirs. However, most reservoirs are nearly full, which is a positive development for water supplies, potentially boosted by falling temperatures and expected new snowfall in the Pyrenees.
The Emergency Medical System (SEM) has introduced a new healthcare model in the Alt Pirineu region, managed by Transport Sanitari de Catalunya (TSC). This plan, backed by an investment of over 75 million euros over five years, aims to increase service hours and the number of available ambulances. In Sort, for instance, services will expand from 8 to 24 hours daily. Additionally, over 1,600 ambulances will be renewed across Catalonia, and the Alt Pirineu will receive 45 units, including new multipurpose, logistical support, and electric shuttle ambulances. These new vehicles feature advanced technology for rapid diagnostics and a fluorescent livery for enhanced visibility.
Sort will become the new headquarters for the Pyrenean Emergency Region, a decision driven by its strategic location and excellent connectivity. This new facility, requiring an investment of over 5 million euros, will improve the coordination of public resources such as firefighters, ambulances, and police, serving counties including Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà, Alta Ribagorça, Alt Urgell, and Cerdanya.
Esterri d’Àneu hosted the second day of 'bitlles pallareses' (Pallars bowling), with 140 students from various educational centers in Pallars Sobirà participating. The project "Recuperem les bitlles pallareses" aims to promote this traditional game among children, fostering collaboration and a playful spirit, with the goal of revitalizing the game both inside and outside of school.
