The Department of Justice and Democratic Quality, through the Directorate General of Democratic Memory, has completed the third archaeological campaign at Hostal de Aidí, in the municipality of Llavorsí, in the Pallars Sobirà region. Despite the efforts, the location of the mass grave, believed to contain the remains of nine people executed by Francoist troops in 1938, has not been confirmed.
The excavation work took place between April 13 and 24, 2026. This operation was carried out simultaneously with another search at the El Prat del Rector mass grave, presumably located a short distance away, in the municipality of La Guingueta de Àneu, as reported by the department.
Despite new documentary research, the review of previous hypotheses, and the delimitation of a new excavation area, no human remains linked to the Hostal de Aidí mass grave have been located. This site is considered one of the most significant spaces for democratic memory in Catalonia, due to the severity of the documented events and their ongoing impact.
Historical documentation indicates that 67 civilians from the Pallars Sobirà region were executed without prior trial as retaliation for republican guerrilla actions. One of the most tragic episodes occurred on May 23 and 24, 1938, when nine individuals were arrested in their homes, transferred, tortured, and finally murdered near Hostal de Aidí.
