The land that housed the four blocks of the Sant Isidori Group in Mollerussa is in a state of notable neglect, with vegetation exceeding a meter in height. Local residents have expressed their unease regarding the overgrown state of these plots and are requesting swift action to clear the vegetation.
The approaching Sant Joan festivities have heightened concerns about fire hazards. The largely dry vegetation could easily ignite from any pyrotechnic element. The lot's location, surrounded by homes and streets without protective fencing, amplifies the neighborhood's anxiety. The overgrowth has extended beyond the plot boundaries, encroaching onto sidewalks and forcing pedestrians to navigate around it or walk close to the road.
Residents are calling for the area to be cleaned before Sant Joan and for regular maintenance to prevent similar situations in the future. Historically, the Mollerussa City Council had undertaken the cleaning work, despite not owning the land, a private ownership that complicates the management of the space.
The Sant Isidori Group comprised four buildings (A, B, C, D) with a total of 160 homes, constructed during the 1950s. Following a progressive degradation and structural issues, which led to some residents opposing demolition, the blocks were razed between 2021 and 2022. The Generalitat covered the demolition costs, while land ownership remained with its proprietors.
The future urban development of this area will depend on agreements reached among the various owners. In the meantime, the land remains vacant, and residents insist on its clearance.
