The City Council of Cornellà del Terri has captured 300 pigeons year-to-date, a 17% increase compared to last year. This measure has led to a "notable" reduction in the bird population within the municipality, particularly in the town center, where they caused dirt and damage to buildings and public spaces, inconveniencing residents.
The campaign, launched in 2025, has established strategic capture points, such as near the school, to continuously address areas with high concentrations of pigeons. The results from the initial months have progressively decreased the population in the most affected zones, contributing to the preservation of buildings and public spaces.
In addition to captures, the council has required owners of disused warehouses, farms, and buildings to implement measures to secure access points and prevent pigeons from forming colonies. These structures had become common resting and breeding grounds for the birds.
The governing team emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive approach, as pigeons move between locations seeking food, water, and shelter. Acting solely in one area could lead to the birds relocating to other zones or the original space being reoccupied.
The campaign, utilizing fixed and mobile traps, will continue its measures to further reduce the pigeon population in the municipality, given the positive results achieved.
