The Els Guiamets reservoir in the Priorat region reached 100% capacity this Wednesday, March 11, overflowing for the first time since 2004.

This marks only the third time the dam has reached its limit since it was built in 1974. According to the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE), the reservoir had previously only reached this level in 1977 and 2004. The recovery follows a severe drought that left the dam at just 1% capacity last December.

"It guarantees three years of water without the need for rain."

The abundance of water provides stability for over 500 farmers and allows them to avoid expensive water pumping from the Ebro river. This new water security is already attracting investment in olive groves and vineyards, halting the loss of agricultural workers seen in recent years.
