The new plant, to be located where the chlorine plant once stood, will begin operations progressively from 2027 and be fully operational by 2029. The project anticipates the creation of 150 jobs and an initial power capacity of 50 MW.
The company has already started demolition work on structures of the former factory. The project, recently presented, aims to be a turning point for the reindustrialization of Terres de l'Ebre. The center will be larger than the AI gigafactory being promoted in Móra la Nova.
The co-founder of Submer Group, Pol Valls, highlighted that the center has been designed to be "sustainable from the root" and that they chose Flix "deliberately" for its "industrial strength, sun, energy, and engineering tradition".
Both the mayor of Flix, Francesc Barbero, and the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, agreed on the project's importance for the region. Illa noted that this data center is compatible with the gigafactory project in Móra la Nova, stating that "they do not hinder each other, they help each other".
The land previously belonged to Ercros, which closed its chlorine plant in 2023. Decontamination work for uncontrolled spills has been completed, which President Illa celebrated as "clean" land.
The president of Ercros, Anton Valero, stated that his company's land "continues to have a future" and that Flix offers "excellent competitive conditions" for new industrial and technological centers.
