Engineer Francesc Fajula has been appointed to lead the public-private consortium responsible for managing the future Gigafactory in Móra la Nova, a strategic project for European technological independence.

The appointment of Francesc Fajula, recognized for his experience as former CEO of the Mobile World Capital Barcelona foundation, marks a decisive step in launching the Gigafactory initiative promoted by the Spanish State. Fajula, a telecommunications engineer from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, will assume the role of CEO with the primary mission of harmonizing the interests of the project's partners.
The initiative, promoted by the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen with support from Portugal, aims to strengthen technological independence from major global powers. The Commission will be responsible for selecting the final location from the various candidacies submitted by member states.
The consortium will feature Telefónica as the main technological operator, alongside major companies such as ACS, MasOrange, Nvidia, Submer, and Multiverse Computing, as well as the Sociedad Española para la Transformación Tecnológica (SETT). The Spanish bid also includes San Fernando de Henares as a technical sub-site.
Minister of Digital Transformation and Public Function, Óscar López, highlighted last January the ambition to make Spain a champion of Artificial Intelligence in the EU. Fajula's appointment, pending a Council of Ministers resolution, is generating consensus, although there is some concern regarding delays from the European Commission in the tender process. The final decision is expected in the last quarter of the year.
